What is GEO?

GEO is Generative Engine Optimization: the practice of getting your company cited when ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews answer a user's question.

Classic search returns a list of links and the user compares them. A generative engine returns a single synthesised answer with a handful of sources attached. Whether you are one of those sources decides whether you exist at this new entry point. Cited sites receive both exposure and transferred trust; uncited sites are simply absent — there is no second page to turn to.

How is GEO different from SEO?

SEO competes for a position on the results page. GEO competes to be a cited source inside a generated answer. Different targets, different technical requirements.

An accessible taxi service site optimised for local search. Customers type specific phrases such as "wheelchair taxi" and "airport big taxi", and the content and markup were built against those.

Frequently asked questions

Can we do just one, GEO or SEO?
Technically yes, but they cover different customer behaviours. Customers still using Google are reached through SEO; customers asking an AI assistant are reached through GEO. Doing one means writing off the other entry point. They share most of the same content foundation, so the marginal cost of doing both is modest.
How long does GEO take to show results?
The technical foundation — structured data, crawler access, content structure — can be in place within days. But generative engines need to re-index and build trust, so citations typically appear in four to twelve weeks. That is slower than classic SEO because model knowledge updates on its own cycle.
How do we verify GEO is working?
Ask the target questions directly in ChatGPT, Perplexity and similar tools, then check whether your company is cited and whether the cited content is accurate. We record a baseline before starting and review it periodically. This is more direct than rank tracking because a citation either happens or it does not.
Our site is built in React or Vue. Does that matter?
Yes. Most AI crawlers do not execute JavaScript, so client-rendered content is invisible to them. The fix is server-side rendering or static generation so the content appears in the raw HTML. We assess the current build before judging how much needs to change.
